Susan Bennett logged into her email in 2011, and realized that her life was about change. "A friend and fellow voice actor wrote me to say, "We're playing around with this new iPhone App. Isn’t this you? "

It was Siri. It was Bennett. She had recorded the audio for the project six-years before and didn't know she would one day be the most valuable voice in the world.

However, her usefulness extends beyond the simple commands we throw at her. Apple's launch of a mainstream voice assistant was a fast step towards web accessibility. A greater percentage of the billions of disabled people in the world could now access the internet, apps, and smartphones with greater ease.

Bennett says, "Without even intending to be, I became a huge tool for many people in the disabled community." It was a stark reminder that millions of disabled people are not able to access the internet.

Siri was born from Siri

Bennett describes her journey to voice-over as a "happy accident". She was a musician who performed backup vocals for a studio project, when the hired narrator couldn't make it. Bennett recalls that the studio owner asked her to fill in because she didn't have an accent. She was so impressed by the experience, she hired a talent agent and voice coach to help her find work.

Voice-over work can be very similar to regular acting. The audition tapes are submitted until you're called for a live audition before waiting for a callback.

An active voice-over artist may record 10 sessions in one week. While they are busy with auditions and gigs, many let their agents manage the finances and paperwork. Many won't be able to recall the recordings from last week. Bennett's Siri sessions with Bennett were many years ago when she first heard herself on every iPhone.

She says, "I didn’t tell anyone that I was Siri for 2 years because it could affect my career." Anonymity is good for voice actors. It is not your intention to be tied to a single voice or character.

Bennett acknowledges that once she had the title publically, it opened up new opportunities for her as a speaker and public speaker. This put Bennett in line to be considered an influential person, one UserWay may turn to.

The most important of all three is relevance. Bennett is a key figure in the web accessibility movement. She's been the voice, even if unwittingly. Siri, Alexa, Cortana, and later Alexa have been the default ambassadors of many disabled people to mainstream. It all makes sense when we recognize Bennett speaking on behalf of UserWay and can hear her voice.

It doesn't work with anyone else -- William Shatner or Dolly Parton -- Siri is "the" voice. Bennett is a win.

Bennett is well-known for her media appearance (roughly 50,000 followers), and she speaks frequently to business audiences. She's not a Kardashian, but she could keynote three to four large events per month during a campaign.

Web accessibility is a reality

We must not lose sight of the main issue.

Siri's birth in 2011 was overshadowed with controversy about privacy and whether artificial intelligence had reached too far. However, it was often overlooked that someone visually impaired or tactically incapacitated could speak a command to get information. This is in contrast to using less efficient accessibility apps and techniques. Unfortunately, this is not unusual. The Web Accessibility In Mind analysis of the top one million pages on the Internet revealed that 97.4% had accessibility issues.

Globally, 15% have some form of disability. When it comes to accessibility, the most common impairments people think about are visual and physically. However, many forget that there are also individuals with hearing or speech impairments. People with neurological or cognitive difficulties are rarely considered. All of these are covered in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, (WCAG), developed by the World Wide Web Consortium.

Is your website accessible to people with disabilities? Although accessibility is not directly related to ranking, Google has always emphasized the importance of accessibility in determining a page or website's search engine rankings.

Isn't a time when web accessibility should be a regular practice and not an afterthought? Siri is the best choice. Bennett states that accessibility is something we should all care more about. Bennett says that millions of people around the world struggle to get by each day due to their physical disabilities. We all have to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

Get regular checkups. Your doctor will keep track of your medical history so that you can stay healthy. If you are at high risk of osteoporosis (a condition that weakens bones), your doctor may recommend more vitamin D and calcium.


You may be recommended by your doctor to have screening tests done to monitor your health and detect conditions before they become serious.


Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.


Reduce Stress

It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.

Deep breathing

Meditation

Yoga

Massage

Exercise

Healthy eating

Talking to a friend or family member.

Develop healthy habits

You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.


Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.

Don't smoke.

Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.

Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Wear your seatbelt.

Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.


Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
