I've had memberships at various yoga studios, which I used at least two times every week. If I was in an exercise phase I would listen to the live Baptiste podcast to keep my body in shape. I could keep my heater in my bedroom or take a walk out during the scorching Florida summers.

Despite my vanity and desire to stare at myself in the mirror I am still attracted. I enjoy looking at my reflection and hoping that I can see the best aspects of me. However, I do not want to shed pounds. I'm not trying to be.

I'm an Black woman. I have boots and boobs however I'd prefer the latter to be more hefty. I also require legs and hips. This isn't a problem. It's not something I'd like to lose.

As I work to maintain my stomach's flat I give myself a bit of grace. My body has brought me back to life and will continue to give me life.

The journey to this point of acceptance was an arduous journey. Accepting the numbers on the scale. To see my clothes and then say, "Damn, you fine ladies!"

However, I struggle to believe that I'm overweight even though I can view my BMI chart on my health app. It shows my weight at my lowest. This is hilarious to me since it's discriminatory.

Our own standards and definition

The ideal of fitness beauty, wellness, and fitness is white and light. These are words that I won't ever apply to me or any other Black women.

We must navigate the fitness, beauty, and wellness industry aware that we're not the typical or target group, yet we're still beautiful and deserve secure places to be active, relaxed, meditate and even vibrate.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) declares that non-Hispanic African adults are the most likely to be overweight. While obesity rates tend to decline with increasing income however, the CDC discovered that there is no distinction in the amount of obesity among Black women, regardless of the amount they earn.

Black women are aware that it's normal to put our family, friends, and colleagues last to care for our beloved family members.

Excessive stretching can raise stress levels and can cause weight increase. If we're always taking care of other people, we can feel too exhausted to look after ourselves.

The path ahead

Black Girls Run is one illustration of this. In 2009, the group was created to fight the growing obesity epidemic impacting Black communities, and particularly Black women.

These groups make fitness more inclusive and accessible. They can be aware of and take care of their members' unique health and fitness needs and connect with them.

This compassion can also be observed in groups such as Black Girls Hike, or in the work of Jessamyn Stanley (Trap Yoga Bae) and Britteny Floyd Mayo (Trap Yoga Bae).

The "quarantine 15", a result of the global pandemic stressors is becoming a fact. The stress is more severe for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), due to a variety of reasons, including the effects of racism, income inequality and health disparities.

Fitness isn't top of the list for Black women at a time when women are suffering the most, both in terms of their status and standing in the market and in the workforce

If it's a top important issue for me and you there are places specifically designed for those like you. There are many who can help you become the healthiest, fittest version of yourself when you're ready to affirmatively say "yes".

For me, I am convinced that in the near future (likely after the arrival of baby number two on the scene) I will be able to return to my bed and take good treatment of myself.

I am inspired by the fact that I am aware Black girls are able to walk, run or bike and swim, skate, dance, and even do yoga.

If you want to avoid problems such as strokes and heart disease, there is an easy way.


Get more fruits and vegetables.

Whole grains are better than refined ones. Brown rice is better than white. Switch to whole-wheat pasta

Consider lean proteins such as poultry, fish and beans.

Reduce your intake of processed foods, sugar, salt, saturated fat, and other unhealthy food.

Flexibility is key to eating well, according to Joyce Meng, MD assistant professor at UConn Health's Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center. You can follow a strict diet plan if you prefer. It's okay if you don't like following a strict diet plan.


Tricia Montgomery (52), founder of K9 Fit Club knows firsthand the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Her favorite things are eating healthy food and making small, frequent meals. She says, "I don’t deny myself anything." "I still enjoy dessert, key lime pie, yum!" -- I love frozen gummy bears and moderation is the key.


Get regular checkups. Your doctor will keep track of your medical history so that you can stay healthy. If you are at high risk of osteoporosis (a condition that weakens bones), your doctor may recommend more vitamin D and calcium.


You may be recommended by your doctor to have screening tests done to monitor your health and detect conditions before they become serious.


Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.


Reduce Stress

It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.


To relieve stress, try:


Deep breathing

Meditation

Yoga

Massage

Exercise

Healthy eating

Talking to a friend or family member.

Develop healthy habits

You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.


Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.

Don't smoke.

Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.

Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Wear your seatbelt.

Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.


Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
