Sometimes, people say they want to translate. So I thought I'd share some tips and tricks I learned from my colleagues and myself. The joke is that translation questions are answered by the context. This is not a rule. I just share what works for me and my colleagues.

Let's not forget about translation definitions. It is a large field. This article will focus on the little bit I do. I translate literary prose written in Polish from English to English.

Software & Hardware

Each person has different methods and tools. I prefer a split-screen layout: the PDF of my Polish text is on the left and the Word document with my English on it on the right. I always have my electronic dictionary open and a web browser for research. I also have a 2-volume physical Polish-English dictionary.

Although it is rare for literary translators, they do use translation software for technical texts. However, I do know people who use transcription software so they can speak out loud and listen to their source text on the audiobook. This is a great way to practice your translation skills, especially for translating dialogue.

Vocabulary & Idioms

It's not enough to translate words into English one-by-one. Although you should try to keep the original words intact, there are many difficult ones that will require you to use your imagination.

Beginners often choose the wrong definition when searching for words in dictionaries. [...] I like to look up words I don't know so I can see if there is a deeper meaning than the first or second. I do internet searches to find common phrases I don't know how to use in normal contexts.

Grammar & syntax

I'm a total grammar nerd. Polish can do certain things English can't. English can also do some things Polish cannot. So I am always looking for opportunities to utilize English to its full potential.

Polish and English grammar is very different. There aren't any hard-and-fast rules for converting between the languages. The Polish perfective (and imperfective) are used differently to the English imperfective (and perfect). Sometimes it helps to take a step back and examine the whole sentence. Once I'm sure I understand the Polish information, I then consider how I can translate that into English. This allows me to avoid getting lost in the Polish structures and also helps me understand the full range English grammar.

Some final words of wisdom

Maybe you're wondering if it is possible to translate. Perhaps you see translators as either eminent scholars who sit at a desk all day, or jet-setting citizens who can speak a dozen languages.

Translations are a skill that can be learned from any background. Many translators who are successful work with English as a second language or learn it from their parents or grandparents. Sometimes monolingual speakers can even team up with native speakers to translate together.

If you want to avoid problems such as strokes and heart disease, there is an easy way.


Get more fruits and vegetables.

Whole grains are better than refined ones. Brown rice is better than white. Switch to whole-wheat pasta

Consider lean proteins such as poultry, fish and beans.

Tricia Montgomery (52), founder of K9 Fit Club knows firsthand the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Her favorite things are eating healthy food and making small, frequent meals. She says, "I don’t deny myself anything." "I still enjoy dessert, key lime pie, yum!" -- I love frozen gummy bears and moderation is the key.


Get regular checkups. Your doctor will keep track of your medical history so that you can stay healthy. If you are at high risk of osteoporosis (a condition that weakens bones), your doctor may recommend more vitamin D and calcium.


You may be recommended by your doctor to have screening tests done to monitor your health and detect conditions before they become serious.


Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.


Reduce Stress

It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.


To relieve stress, try:


Deep breathing

Meditation

Yoga

Massage

Exercise

Healthy eating

Talking to a friend or family member.

Develop healthy habits

You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.


Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.

Don't smoke.

Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.

Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Wear your seatbelt.

Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.


Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
