Leaders are under increasing pressure not to send emails after work hours or to ask employees to work beyond the 9-5 workday.
Communication is key to flexibility
Employees who are flexible with their work hours should have open communication with their managers about what they can expect from them. Although managers may be praised for their flexibility and willingness to allow employees to work when they choose, it can cause problems if there isn't strong communication about deadlines and availability.
Leaders need to communicate with their employees about when and what days they are able to work. For example, if you are in client services and have to deliver monthly reports to clients, you need to make sure that your team knows when they can be reached.
It is important to establish a process that outlines how and when employees have the right to exercise their flexibility. Does an employee need to inform their manager before they take a few hours off? Are your managers expecting employees to inform them or just take time off? How will you make sure that all work is covered if an employee requests a few days' leave on short notice? These questions are not answered and it can lead to problems later.
