Over the past 18 months, employees have experienced major shifts in their work/life balance. The recent large resignations are a clear sign of this change. This has led to an increase in the number of employees quitting their jobs or downsizing. Employees often leave in search of balance and flexibility.

EY reports that nine out of ten employees desire more flexibility in their workday to meet personal needs and set their own hours. As flexibility is more sought after, there has been a greater need to define boundaries between home and work. Leaders are under increasing pressure not to send emails after work hours or to ask employees to work beyond the 9-5 workday.

Communication is key to flexibility

Employees who are flexible with their work hours should have open communication with their managers about what they can expect from them. Although managers may be praised for their flexibility and willingness to allow employees to work when they choose, it can cause problems if there isn't strong communication about deadlines and availability.

Leaders need to communicate with their employees about when and what days they are able to work. For example, if you are in client services and have to deliver monthly reports to clients, you need to make sure that your team knows when they can be reached.

It is important to establish a process that outlines how and when employees have the right to exercise their flexibility. Does an employee need to inform their manager before they take a few hours off? Are your managers expecting employees to inform them or just take time off? How will you make sure that all work is covered if an employee requests a few days' leave on short notice? These questions are not answered and it can lead to problems later. It may also cause you to reduce your flexibility, which will frustrate everyone.

Flexibility is not without accountability

Managers may be reluctant to give employees more flexibility as they fear it will reduce team productivity. Gartner discovered that flexibility was the most important driver of productivity for 43 percent of employees. Flexibility is a key factor in employees being more productive.

Leaders in flexible workplaces cannot manage their employees based on how many hours they work. They must evaluate employees on the basis of their results--measurable outcomes that they produce.

You must establish clear goals and metrics for your company and hold your employees accountable to them. This will allow you to offer flexibility. Your team members will focus less on how and when they accomplish their tasks. They should discuss their issues if they are not achieving their goals.

Flexibility is not without compromises

This aspect of workplace flexibility is the most difficult for employees to accept. If employees have the freedom to schedule their work around their personal commitments and take time off as they wish, it is fair that the company asks the same from them when it's required by the business.

Example: Would it be fair to ask an employee who was granted Friday off to go to a child's sporting event to finish any unfinished tasks during the weekend? Managers who allow employees to take off time as they need to complete urgent tasks over the weekend are allowed to ask for time back. This is especially true if there's an important deadline such as a product launch, or big sales proposal.

Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.


Reduce Stress

It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.


To relieve stress, try:


Deep breathing

Meditation

Yoga

Massage

Exercise

Healthy eating

Talking to a friend or family member.

Develop healthy habits

You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.


Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.

Don't smoke.

Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.

Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Wear your seatbelt.

Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.


Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
