Physical constraints like geography and distance affect how we live, work and produce. Extended Reality technology promises to overcome the limitations of distance and open up new value sources that appeal to the imagination.
The augmented reality game Pokemon Go was a huge hit in 2016. Alibaba, the largest online retailer in the world, opened its virtual-reality shop, Buy+, to Chinese customers that year. Facebook recently announced that the Oculus Go VR headset would go on sale for $199 in 2018, which is roughly 170 Euros or 150 Pounds. This was part of its goal to reach one billion people using virtual reality.
These technologies are referred to as augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and virtual reality (VR) together with the umbrella term "extended Reality" (XR). Many people believe they have over-promised but not delivered. These examples are indicative of a series of trends that are combining to make XR a (actual) reality. A recent estimate put the industry's potential worth at $200 billion by 2020.
How can business leaders capitalize on this huge emerging opportunity? First, they must understand and prepare for the Imagination Economy. This is an economy in which the widespread availability of XR technology allows people to transcend their physical limitations and unlock new economic opportunities.
These three trends are key to ushering in a new economic era: peak consumption, rapid technological advancements, and a shift in how people view work and organisation.
Peak stuff. The demand from consumers for experiences is growing. This is evident in the six-year streak of outperformance by the global tourism and travel industry. This trend is likely to continue: 78 per cent of millennials say they would rather spend on experiences than physical goods. This shift in consumer preferences has led to disappointing sales at some retailers. It doesn't have be an either/or situation: virtual experiences can be used as a way to enhance consumption. Diageo provided a VR headset with headphones to guests at a Singapore food and drink festival. Visitors were given a virtual tour of Scotland and the Highland distillery as they tasted the whisky. The experience was rated as excellent by eighty-five per cent of participants. This led to increased sales and plans to expand the VR experience to other countries.
Changes in the Workplace Modern workplaces aren't the same as they were in the past. People are less likely to work for one company or to go to work every day. For example, 50 million Americans are freelancers. As more baby boomers retire in a staggered fashion, this number will only increase. These workers want to be able to continue working, find their next project easily, work in a larger enterprise and remain independent. XR technologies may be a key tool for bringing together a growing workforce.
Technological Building Blocks. Technological innovations such as 3D printing and superfast connectivity, sensors, human-computer interaction, and other technological developments are providing a solid foundation upon which XR technology can be built. Cloud computing and 5G networks can meet the computational demands of wireless VR headsets. This is due to their projected growth of 650 percent in data consumption over the next four year. The use of haptic technology allows users to feel as if they are touching an actual object in a virtual environment. The latest advances in eye-tracking technology enable users to aim, pick up and throw objects in virtual games by simply looking in a specific direction. The Imagination Economy will be further supported by technology advances, such as improved battery life for mobile devices.
The Promise of the Imagination Economy
The increasing penetration of XR technology will blur the lines between real and virtual in the workplace, society, and marketplace over the next five to ten year.
Marketplace. The Marketplace. The compound annual growth rates for AR and VR games is expected to exceed 50 percent between 2016-2021. Live streaming of events, including the Rio 2016 summer Olympic Games and Coldplay's Chicago concert in 2017, is also gaining momentum.
Other industries are also exploring XR technology. Ikea's AR app lets customers place digital replicas in their living rooms using the rear-facing camera on their smartphones. The virtual furniture can be viewed from every angle and shoppers can even walk around it. 3D furniture is scaled to 98 percent accuracy and features true-to-life representations for texture, fabric, lighting, shadows, and lighting.

If you want to avoid problems such as strokes and heart disease, there is an easy way.
Get more fruits and vegetables.
Whole grains are better than refined ones. Brown rice is better than white. Switch to whole-wheat pasta
Consider lean proteins such as poultry, fish and beans.
Reduce your intake of processed foods, sugar, salt, saturated fat, and other unhealthy food.
Flexibility is key to eating well, according to Joyce Meng, MD assistant professor at UConn Health's Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center. You can follow a strict diet plan if you prefer. It's okay if you don't like following a strict diet plan.
Tricia Montgomery (52), founder of K9 Fit Club knows firsthand the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Her favorite things are eating healthy food and making small, frequent meals. She says, "I don’t deny myself anything." "I still enjoy dessert, key lime pie, yum!" -- I love frozen gummy bears and moderation is the key.
Get regular checkups. Your doctor will keep track of your medical history so that you can stay healthy. If you are at high risk of osteoporosis (a condition that weakens bones), your doctor may recommend more vitamin D and calcium.
You may be recommended by your doctor to have screening tests done to monitor your health and detect conditions before they become serious.
Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.
It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.
To relieve stress, try:
Talking to a friend or family member.
Develop healthy habits
You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.
Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.
Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.
Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.
Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Wear your seatbelt.
Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.
Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
