What effect does virtualization and globalization have on team dynamics? ESMT Berlin created an innovative game that pits business leaders against fictional hackers in order to discover the truth.

"The Virus"

Berlin, January 2020. An executive group is silently ushered into a conference room. Their company has been attacked by hackers. Anonymous hackers have sent cryptic requests that must be fulfilled within 30 minutes or the entire company's client data will be public.

But that's not all. The firm, like many others in the field, has been looking to expand its international client base. It is currently operating in three locations. Each office has received fragments of the hackers' demands, which means that each team only has part of the information needed to decode and crack the series coded messages.

As the news sinks in, a deathly silence falls on the room. It may surprise you to learn what type of action this is. Quickly distributed are paper, felt-tip pens, iPads, and scissors. On the conference room's wall is projected a countdown clock.

This is a fake crisis scenario that the company uses to teach, and not a real threat. It forms the introduction of an executive education exercise by Dr. Nora Grasselli from ESMT, a world-renowned expert in organizational psychodynamics. The "Virus" exercise aims to encourage discussion and learning about leadership and teamwork in modern times.

Although it may seem like a game, today's business leaders feel the risk of viruses infiltrating valuable business assets and infecting them. It could be an invisible biological enemy, such as a coronavirus pandemic, that paralyzes all business activities or an anonymous group threatening to gain access to confidential data. These unexpected crisis situations require impeccable teamwork if the company is to survive.

Challenge: Global, virtual and liquid teams

What does it mean to have impeccable teamwork? This is how to understand the profound changes in team constellations and teamwork over the past decade.

Teams around the world

In the past, everyone who was assigned to a project commuted to the same office from Monday to Friday. Feedback and progress updates were mainly done in face-toface meetings, either at weekly meetings or in the staff canteen during lunch.

It is more common that many of the key elements of a project are planned, discussed, and then executed in offices located on the other side. Slack and Asana, two of the most popular online project management tools and video conferencing softwares, were widely used before the coronavirus pandemic. These tools allow team members to meet in simulated places and collaborate in real-time from different locations, such as London, New York, Shanghai.

It is more likely than not that the most important elements of a project for a team will be developed, discussed, and executed in offices located on the other side.

Many business leaders are looking for a competitive edge and want to "go global". You may be the sales head for an online retailer and want to spread your customer service representatives across different time zones in order to better serve clients who live in new countries. You may find that a freelancer web developer in New Delhi is able to fix your app's back-end code for a lower price than your local market.

Global hiring has many benefits that go beyond the financial side. Research shows that global teams are highly creative and efficient in knowledge generation. These teams have better access to experts and can speed up the search for innovative solutions. They also show increased productivity (Batarseh, et al. 2017,).

It is not difficult to see that working together in a virtual environment can have its challenges. It's easy to send a Zoom invitation to your group but not to clearly state the agenda or roles of the meeting invitees. This lack of a formal framework can make group video calls more risky. It can also lead to disengagement among participants. The call participants are physically separated from the person arguing their case, and they are more likely to become mentally distant. They are also distracted by the distraction of their email inbox and internet browser, which is just one click away.

Managers should not react to disengagement by increasing top-down surveillance of remote team members. Micromanagement can be a trap that is easy to fall into. It serves only to diminish the individual team members' expertise, infringe on the creativity of others, and ultimately to undermine trust. Global managers have many more effective strategies to take advantage of the global team's greater expertise and flexibility.

Research has shown that global teams can have double-edged swords. Global teams can generate more creative ideas because of the variety of cultures and backgrounds they include. Their ideas are less cohesive and they fail to manage conflict (Batarseh, et al. 2017).

Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.


Reduce Stress

It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.

Deep breathing

Meditation

Yoga

Massage

Exercise

Healthy eating

Talking to a friend or family member.

Develop healthy habits

You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.


Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.

Don't smoke.

Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.

Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Wear your seatbelt.

Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.


Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
