Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), which has surpassed $1 trillion market value, was awarded its largest-ever rental car order by Hertz. This deal reinforced Tesla's ambitions of becoming the top electric car manufacturer in the next decade.

Tesla shares rose as high as 14.9%, to $1,045.02, making them the most valuable automaker in the world according to Reuters calculations based upon its most recent filing.

Tesla joins the elite club of trillion dollar companies, which includes Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL.O), Alphabet Inc. (AAPL.O), Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN.O), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O), and Apple Inc. (AAPL.O).

Many automakers don't boast about their sales to rental car agencies, which are often done at discounts in order to sell slow-selling models. Hertz's order of 100,000 Tesla cars by 2022 was a sign that electric cars are not a niche product and will be a dominant mass-market product in the near future, according to Tesla and its investors.

Mark Fields, interim chief executive officer at Hertz, stated that electric vehicles are mainstream and that there is growing global interest in them.

In some markets, electric vehicle demand is rising. Consulting firm JATO Dynamics reported Monday that the Tesla Model 3 was last month's best-selling electric vehicle in Europe.

Analysts and investors are currently focusing on the long-term, rather than the immediate challenges. Morgan Stanley raised its Tesla price target 33% to $1200 because it expects that the electric carmaker will exceed 8 million deliveries by 2030.

Hertz's rescue also highlighted the power of Tesla's brand as the company emerges from bankruptcy and seeks to revitalize its once-dominant brand. A group of investors led Hertz's rescue, including Certares Opportunities, Knighthead Capital Management and Apollo Capital Management.

Mark Fields, interim CEO of Hertz, stated that the Tesla order will be delivered by 2022.
