The latest global ISG figures show that cloud-as a service contracts were worth $13.4bn in the third quarter, 55% more than the previous year.

ISG also reported an increase of 40% in the value of traditional IT outsourcing (known as managed services) to $8.4bn.

ISG measures contracts of at least $5m in value.

Steve Hall, president of ISG, stated that the global demand for IT outsourcing services has never been stronger since ISG began reporting on it in 2014.

He stated that this is more than just a pent-up demand from the pandemic. It's a structural shift for market as enterprise customers accelerate digital transformation strategies, modernise legacy environments, and migrate to the cloud. We see this trend continuing into the future, even with some economic headwinds. There is no sign of slowing down."

According to IDC research, almost $60 billion has been spent on IT services this year. This is 26% more than the same nine month period last year.

The total amount spent in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) was $6.5bn, which is 36% more than the same period last year.

Spending on cloud-based as-a service contracts increased by 59% to $3.3bn. Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) contracts were worth $2.4bn and software-as-a-service (SaaS) deals totalled $930m.

ISG projects that cloud-based IaaS, SaaS, and IaaS contracts will be valued 25% higher in 2021 than 2020 and that firm managed services contract values will increase by just under 10%.

Hall said that the outlook for technology and business services markets remains positive. The volume of managed service deals in the pipeline indicates strong buying intentions by enterprises looking to partner with digital transformation companies. We believe that the market is not dependent on large deals. The smaller deals will eventually turn into larger engagements, as more transformation efforts pick up.

He stated that cloud-based services are still in their infancy and that there is a chance that rising prices might hinder growth.

Hall stated that the as-a service market is still in its early stages of maturity. Inflationary pressures are a near-term headwind. Providers can navigate possible price increases with clients or change the pricing model to an outcome-based pricing structure, and the multi-year secular growth drivers will remain healthy.
