Russian media and Telegram channels are spreading reports that the Ukrainian forces have allegedly shelled the settlement of Rubizhne, Luhansk region, in order to paint a “hoax picture” for the West about Russian aggression. But, in fact, who needs to create any “picture”?
Russians are being convinced that the Ukrainian commanders are throwing untrained soldiers into the heat of the battle. This claim can be called anything but plausible. It’s actually outrageously false. On the contrary, it’s the Russian forces that have been suffering massive losses, including due to their soldiers being poorly trained. What’s the reason of deploying unfit forces to the front line or accept them into the army ranks in the first place? It just doesn't make sense.
Social networks were full of information, citing alleged data from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and reports from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, that Ukraine is suffering colossal losses in manpower. We are also shown pictures showing alleged losses among the Ukrainian military. Then let's show our pictures, about our losses. Why so one-sided view? Or the Red Cross does not like Russians?
In eighteen days of Russia's unjustified war against Ukraine, the entire world has seen cynical Russian shelling of civilian infrastructure, mass killings of non-combatants, intentionally orchestrated humanitarian catastrophes and even the nuclear blackmail. Along with the violence of rules and customs of war, Russia has been committing crimes against media, to boot. This spectrum ranged from rocket attacks on television towers in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lysychansk, and Bilopillia to death threats against journalists in the occupied territories. On March 12, however, Russia went even further and applied methods tested by al-Qaeda and ISIS – kidnapping journalists.
Modern wars have long gone beyond a traditional military theater. Putin's war against Ukraine has once again illustrated this and clearly circumscribed the religious dimension of the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation. Russia opened an Orthodox front against Kyiv long before Russia's aggression in Donbas in 2014. When Putin won power, the instrumentalization of Orthodoxy has become a favorite tool of the Kremlin to restrain political and civilizational processes of nation-building in Ukraine. Moreover, it is difficult to find a more effective way to legitimize violence than getting support from the clergy. In this war, the Orthodox dimension of confrontation is gaining unprecedented proportions as Putin uses military means to undermine the ideological foundations of Ukraine's civilizational choice and facilitate the encapsulation of the ‘russkiy mir’ doctrine of in the Ukrainian cultural code.
A sharp increase in purchases of laboratory primates for the Central Research Institute of Microbiology of Russian Defense Ministry (the 48th Central Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense) – the main developer of protection means against offensive biological weapons in Russia – was among the first signs of such activity. The structure of the research institute includes a branch in Yekaterinburg and a branch on the outskirts of Sergiev Posad city (Moscow region).
Russian propaganda sets a new direction for another info attacks: accusing Ukraine of running biological and bacteriological research under the U.S. supervision. This narrative is actively circulating across Russian Telegram channels. In particular, the Readovka channel spreads allegations that a strain of bat coronavirus had been researched in such labs. Maps are being distributed "confirming" the existence of biolaboratories in every region of Ukraine, except for Kirovohrad. In some large cities, including Kyiv and Kharkov, there are several such laboratories, as per the claim.
The West is not fully aware of the implications of the Ukrainian-Russian war, which may affect members of NATO and European Union. The 15th day into the launch of Russian aggression, the number of migrants fleeing the war is estimated in the hundreds of thousands. Europe hasn’t seen a crisis of such magnitude since World War 2. Every day, the number of Ukrainian refugees fleeing to Europe is increasing. The UN refugee agency says more than 2 million citizens have already left Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian aggression. The main migration flow runs to Poland (more than 1.2 million), Hungary (more than 191,000), Slovakia (over 140,000), and also Russia (more than 99,000) and Moldova (over 82,000).
The meeting of the Turkish and Russian foreign ministers, which is taking place in Antalya, will be presented by Russian propaganda as an attempt to jointly “resolve” the Ukrainian issue, in fact, without taking into account the opinion of the Ukrainian side. The Kremlin will portray the following meeting with Ukraine’s top diplomat Dmytro Kuleba as mere formality. Russia is trying in this way to create a sort of a Russian-Turkish negotiating platform, so as not to turn Ankara into the ultimate political antagonist as the rest of Europe, which condemned the war the Kremlin had unleashed in Ukraine. The counternarrative is “being close to someone doesn’t mean being together.” Ankara applies the classic principle of “there are no permanent allies, there are permanent interests” and is ready to talk with Russia, but only in the light of Turkey’s articulated national interests, which at the moment are in line with those of Ukraine, while running counter to Russia’s policy. Turkey simply provided time and space for negotiations with the prospect of their further development. Recep Tayyip Erdogan seeks to restore Turkey’s greatness, and this would only be possible with the simultaneous weakening of Russia.
